5 ways to make ice cream healthy

One of the best things about the warmer months is that they give us the green light to eat more ice-cream – we are only doing it to cool ourselves down after all! (Sniff)

But although humble ice cream comes in many different shapes, sizes, flavours and pairings, us Brits can often be creatures of habit and like to stick to what we know – mint choc chip, in our case.

Cold Brew

So, in the spirit of summer inspiration, here are a few ideas for you to spice up your ice cream this weekend…

But first, a few things you need to know…

  • Ice cream originally came from ancient Greece – they ate snow from the mountains with flavourings. It was then developed by the Europeans in the 1300s as the ice cream we know today.
  • The perfect temperature for scooping ice cream is between six and 10 degrees.
  • One in five people admit to sharing an ice cream cone with their pet, but make sure you give them the second half to avoid the transference of any nasty germs from them to you. We know you keep them clean but we don’t always know where their mouths have been. Moving swiftly on…

5 ways to make ice cream healthy

1. Swap unhealthy toppings like chocolate sauce for dried fruit, fruit compote, nuts and honey.

2. Make your own! Swap cream for low-fat milk or coconut milk and use frozen fruits or avocado to add flavour, texture and thickness.

3. Cut down the ingredients even more and try blending bananas by themselves. It still makes a thick, cold, fruity treat.

4. If you’re going to buy the ice cream, make sure you read the ingredients first – you’re looking for the ones with the least ingredients and less additives.

5. Whether it’s store bought or home made, take the time to freeze the ice cream in small one-person portions. This will ensure you eat a reasonable amount and refrain from dipping the spoon in just one more time.

5 alternative (but equally delicious) ways to eat ice cream

1. Ever heard of an ice cream float? It usually involves putting a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass of Coca-Cola – but it works just as well with pink lemonade or soda and lime.

2. Put a layer of ice cream in between two home made biscuits (use the biscuit cutter to make sure the ice cream is the perfect shape), to make an ice cream sandwich.

3. Experiment using different treats as a substitute to the cone – the saltiness of a pretzel can bring out the sweetness of chocolate ice cream in a delicious meeting of opposites.

4. Make it boozy! Although rum and raisin is the classic – gin, brandy and kahlua also make delicious ice cream flavours. Pour a shot into your bowl and let the flavours sing.

5. Make it into a cake. This strawberry meringue ice cream cake is our favourite.
